ON OFF - A pitch for a magazine
OVERVIEW
ON OFF was a project I created during my second year of university, focusing on the closure of shops seen through their windows during the early 2021 lockdown in London. As part of my fashion editorial and advertising module, we were tasked with creating a magazine spread in one of those fields. I chose editorial, as it aligned with the artistic direction of my project, which aimed to capture the "unseen" aspects of life during the pandemic. Additionally, we were asked to pitch our work to a prospective client, and I chose Aperture magazine due to its broad coverage of photography, from fashion to fine art. I felt ON OFF would be a good fit for their publication, as the project explores a sense of the abnormal.
The differences between the shops I photographed were striking. Some were completely emptied out, as though abandoned, while others appeared as if there had been no pandemic at all. These contrasts are reflected in the images and the overall aesthetic of the magazine spread. The shops I covered included restaurants, furniture stores, and sports shops like Nike and Puma.
A few of the spreads are shown below, along with the cover for the potential magazine. This project helped me discover my passion for the editorial side of magazines. After I graduate this year, I will be interning for a month at LUX magazine, further exploring this path.
