Through the Generations

Through the Generations is a project that examines photography as a time-based medium, exploring how time influences both continuity and change. It reflects on the contrasts and connections between my father's generation and mine, focusing on the ways in which social impact, identity, and communication have evolved over time.

Growing up, my father was largely unaware of the full extent of apartheid's impact, only fully grasping its weight in later years. In contrast, I am navigating an era where movements like Black Lives Matter are central to contemporary conversations on race and justice. This difference in awareness underscores the shifting landscape of cultural movements and highlights how the passage of time shapes our understanding of social issues and personal identity.

The work explores how, in today's world, we communicate more, whether its through conversations, blogs, actions, protests, love, or even hate. It's a project that remains open-ended, with the hope that it will grow into something more meaningful and expansive over time.

Through 'Through the Generations', I want to offer others insight into my past, a past that carries weight and relevance in today’s world. Despite its darker chapters, I hope to foster a sense of pride in my heritage. This isn't just about South Africa; it's also about the impact of Britain and America’s involvement in apartheid, as well as their roles in the broader, ongoing fight against racism. The project highlights the ways that history (both personal and collective) shapes our present, reminding us of the power of memory and the need for continued reflection.

Working on this project has allowed me to confront the truth of my past while also fostering a deeper connection with my father. For years, I barely knew him; his emotional walls were impenetrable, something I’ve mentioned before. But through this work, I’ve uncovered layers of his story and mine, that wasn't shared before. It’s not just about understanding the past, but about breaking down the barriers between us, revealing a side of him that was previously hidden. This project has become a bridge, transforming our relationship in unexpected and profound ways.
